The DXM and DPH combination, broken down and described

Onset : 30 - 120 minutes
Duration : 4 - 8 hours
Dosage,
Low : 250mg / 250mg
Medium : 300mg / 300mg
Strong : 350mg / 350mg
Heavy : 400mg / 400mg
This article is going to serve as a complete breakdown and categorization for the consistent subjective effects that are induced across all people who undergo the DXM and DPH combination experience. This is something that I am writing because, although there are an infinite amount of possible drug combinations, almost all of them simply induce the effects of the two separate drugs on top of each other in a very predictable manner. However, these two substances do just the opposite of that, producing a very unique synergy when taken together, potentiating the positive aspects of the other substance whilst simultaneously suppressing its negative side effects; all with distinct visual and hallucinatory effects that are found on neither of these substances when taken on their own.
If you are not familiar with the effects or chemistry of either of these substances, you can learn in detail about DXM by clicking here, along with a similar analysis and breakdown of the DPH trip right here.
Body high:
The body high of this combination is that of a mild glow that encompasses the body, with a tingling sensation at the ends of the fingers and toes. It is a relaxing and a completely lethargic state felt alongside the sensation that gravity has increased itself in intensity many times over, resulting in an unnaturally heavy body and consistently causing trippers to want to lay down on a comfortable spot and avoid engaging in any physical activities.
Since this is accompanied by feelings of dehydration and dry mouth, it is important for trippers to try and remember to consistently take small sips of water throughout the duration of the experience.
As a user increases their dosage, physical detachment and dissociation begins to take its toll and the body high is slowly taken over by a decrease in tactile input, along with a feeling of numbness and disconnection, which is eventually capable of becoming completely anaesthetic-like in its effects. This can be described as starting out with sensations of being somehow physically removed from the body, physical autonomy and a proportional lack of motor control. In terms of mobility this combination results in more than a simple lack of motor control and spatial awareness, creating a hilariously strange and robotic style of movement in its users every single time they try to walk or perform basic movements. This is a style of movement known by the dissociative community as the “Robo Walk”.
The greatest thing about the physical effects of taking DXM and DPH in a combination is the way in which they both lessen the negative side effects of the other substance. For example, thanks to DPH’s nausea suppressing abilities, this combination is significantly less likely to make you feel like you desperately need to vomit than simply taking DXM by itself. In return, DXM’s dissociating and anesthetic like qualities have an extremely positive effect on the unbearably strong physical dysphoria which DPH is infamous for. This completely eliminates the muscle cramps, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, restless leg syndrome, extreme dehydration and occasionally irregular heart beat experienced when DPH is tried simply by itself. This allows the unique delirium, hallucinations and visual effects of the DPH experience to become much more accessible to your average person.
Head space:
The thought patterns of a typical DPH + DXM trip are characterized by that of a general sense of detachment and dissociation, accompanied by delirium and a partial to complete loss of ability to reason or think rationally.
As a user increases their dosage, mental detachment begins to take its toll and any thoughts present within the brain are slowly taken over by bizarre mental states of dissociation. These can be described at lower levels as feelings of detachment from the external environment, making the world seem as if it were being watched through a TV, a dream or just intrinsically unreal in some way. This creates feelings of being mentally withdrawn from the environment, allowing people to look at their lives from an almost third person perspective.
Alongside this, an inability to process basic information becomes present, with trippers finding themselves in states of confusion, disorientation and mild paranoia. They are often unable to process basic things such as language or events that are happening around them, resulting in the unique effect of trippers speaking in nonsensical and meaningless statements with unusually sinister undertones or complete gibberish with no decipherable words of any sort.
As the detachment increases proportional to the dosage consumed, the mind becomes sedated and the ego becomes severely suppressed and inhibited, eventually resulting in ego death. This impairs cognitive functioning and suppresses the short term memory until it begins to struggle or become completely incapable of holding onto a normal thought for any length of time. This is an effect that is worsened by this combination. Large amounts of amnesia and memory loss are experienced, with trips often becoming forgotten completely or only remembered in short snippets, even immediately after they’re over. This happens in much the same way that our dreams are almost always forgotten and rarely remembered in their entirety.
In terms of the mentally dysphoric effects that are usually experienced when DPH is taken by itself, the universal experience of extreme paranoia, panic, depression, agitation, nervousness and feelings of impending doom seem to be completely suppressed when combined with DXM. This results in a trip that is almost completely devoid of overwhelmingly bad vibes whilst still maintaining a somehow sinister or other worldly and nightmarish theme to it.
Visual effects:
The visuals and distortions experienced during a DPH and DXM combination trip are surprisingly psychedelic in places, despite the fact that this trip is technically classed as a dissociating and delirious state, not a psychedelic one.
In terms of the specific style of visuals, they can be described as indescribably complex and intricate webs of ever shifting geometric forms which are very slow in their movements when compared to visuals experienced with traditional psychedelics such as LSD or Mushrooms. It has a colour scheme which is dark in its palette and somehow ominous or sinister in its appearance and style. They manifest themselves in a traditional psychedelic manner when the eyes are closed but appear as static, unmoving shapes and geometry which the external environment morphs into when the eyes are open and looking at any single point, always resetting once the person double takes. This is an unusual visual effect because both dissociative and psychedelic visuals do not do this, instead preferring to manifest themselves as a fast moving and flat translucent veil across the visual field which cannot be interacted with.
The distortions and alterations of open eye perception experienced on this combination are once again, surprisingly psychedelic in comparison to either of these substances when taken by themselves. The external environment begins to generally morph, melt, bend, flow and shift in an extremely fluid fashion. This has a distinctive indescribable style to it, with a large amount of blurriness, as well as significantly less detail and clarity when compared to the distortions found within LSD and Mushrooms.
Another distinct visual effect which I have not found on any substance besides this very specific combination is a distortion which exclusively effects textures. This causes textures to become 3-Dimensional, rising up out of the surface which they reside upon in a strangely intricate and static fashion that looks similar in appearance to condensed, mostly opaque and coloured smoke.
None of the above effects however, although many in number and intense experience wise are the focus of this trip when this combination is taken at anything above low doses. At moderate to high doses the trip becomes completely dominated by extremely detailed and vivid delirious hallucinatory states. These are unique in that they offer solid hallucinations which display themselves seamlessly into waking consciousness and the external environment like fully formed dreams or delusions. In contrast, classical psychedelics and dissociatives have progressive levels of multiple all-encompassing sensory effects, before reaching the level of concrete hallucination. It’s only with delirium that you can experience solid hallucinations of people, objects, forms, creatures, etc within and interacting with your external environment. As these increase in vividness and detail in a way that is proportional to dosage, they start with extremely detailed transformations of existing objects but eventually become all encompassing alternate realities and imagined landscapes of infinite possibility.
When experienced, these hallucinations are always believed to be real in much the same way that we happily accept the logic defying and nonsensical plots to our dreams. This is an unavoidable factor of delirium that can for obvious reason, go wrong if somebody perceives a negative or scary hallucination, which causes them to injure themselves or the people around them. This means that serious precautions have to be taken before anybody even considers undergoing a trip such as this.
Conclusion:
Although this is not an experience that I wish to repeat on any sort of regular basis, the DXM and DPH combination is an extremely fascinating one, making delirium accessible to me in a way that DPH on its own never could. This is something that is owed purely to its horribly dysphoric physical and mental effects. This combination should never be taken by beginners and is not for the faint hearted, due to its very sinister undertones in its hallucinations and general vibe of the trip. If you want to try this drug however, both substances are freely available and unscheduled throughout every country in the world and easily accessible through the power of google search. Keep in mind however that neither of these drugs are 100% physically safe, especially when taken repeatedly on a regular basis. You’ll need to do some independent research on both of these substances before you even consider trying an experience such as this.
DPH and Datura, broken down and described
This article is going to serve as my attempt at writing a comprehensive break down and comparison guide for the universally felt subjective effects found within the two most commonly used deliriants. Including a basic run down of the drug itself and its chemistry. The guide for deliriants in general can be found here and includes a very detailed description of this particular class of hallucinogen.
These two specific deliriants include Datura and DPH. The reason I am not writing an individual guide for each substance is that they do not seem to vary enough in terms of visual hallucinatory effects to warrant it, instead differing in their alternate styles of body high, dysphoria and head space. Which I will now begin to break down…
DPH (Diphenhydramine):
Onset : 60 - 120 minutes
Duration : 4 - 8 hours
Normal After Effects : up to 8 hours
DPH (Diphenhydramine) is a completely legal, freely available over the counter first-generation antihistamine possessing anticholinergic and sedative properties. It was one of the first known antihistamines, invented in 1943 by Dr. George Rieveschl. Usually sold under the brand name of “benadryl”. It is also available in many forms of many generic or store brand medication which are mainly used to treat allergies. Taken in “recreational” doses however, DPH becomes an extremely powerful deliriant.
In terms of it’s subjective effects the DPH trip is unlike anything found within psychedelics or dissociatives. It is not like other drugs in sense of dosage, a light dose does not equal a light trip. Doses under 300mg induce more of a restless feeling, body high, and muscle relaxation. Doses typically 600mg+ are what make the user enter delirium and begin to see fully formed hallucinations. Anything in between these two extremes is often a disappointing and uncomfortable experience, characterized with twitching and only very minor hallucinations, mostly in the peripheral vision.
The physical transition from reality to delirium is an extremely uncomfortable one, with the first noticeable sensation being that of having an extremely heavy body, as if the gravity has been multiplied by a thousand. Combined with muscle cramps, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, restless leg syndrome, extreme dehydration and a sometimes painfully irregular heart beat. Users also commonly report all encompassing and painful jolts of electricity that spontaneously manifest themselves in a similar rhythm to hiccups. A frequent need to urinate also tends to painfully conflict with a feeling of concrete blocking your urethra.
Thought patterns are also generally negative and dysphoric throughout the trip, generally consisting of extreme paranoia and feelings of impending doom. Feelings of being unable to communicate or understand normal language also become apparent.
The levels of dysphoria experienced however, vary between people, with a very few users reporting that they do not seem to experience them at all. The hallucinations themselves however eventually become elaborate enough to cause the tripper to completely forget how terrible they are feeling. They are often extremely interesting. Manifesting themselves as completely concrete forms that are indistinguishable from reality in the trippers delirious state. Varying from mundane, to fascinating and to horrifying nightmarish experiences.
If you want to try DPH it is extremely easy to find as an over the counter sleep and allergy aid in most countries around the world. It is also available in bulk amounts for extremely cheap prices on amazon. Genuinely useful as a sleep aid, a dream enhancer and a potentiator of weed in low doses. It can become fatal if amounts close to or exceeding 2 grams are consumed and can result in death when combined with most stimulants and MAOI inhibitors.
Datura:
Onset : 60 - 120 minutes
Duration : 8 - 18 hours
Normal After Effects : up to 3 days
Datura is a genus of legal flowering plants that contains two psychoactive chemicals in roughly equal amounts. These are known as Scopolamine and Atropine, two molecules that are both in the tropane alkaloid class, with anticholinergic effects. The plants precise and natural distribution seems to be throughout most of the temperate and tropical regions of the globe, owing to its extensive cultivation and naturalization. There are a total of nine different species in the Datura genus, but the two most well-known species are Datura inoxia and Datura strammonium. Both of which have been used in a shamanic context for religious purposes on most continents since before recorded history began, with records of its use being found throughout the ancient americas, europe and india.
In terms of it’s subjective effects the Datura trip is extremely similar to that of DPH with a significantly longer duration but less dysphoria. The mental transition from reality to delirium is an extremely smooth one, a stuporous, hazy, mildly dissociating, light and floaty high is felt, and everything seems almost normal apart from waves of mild to intense paranoia. Feelings of being unable to communicate or understand normal language also become apparent with higher doses.
Although Datura is not nearly as dysphoric as DPH it is still capable of feeling overwhelmingly unpleasant. With extreme dry mouth, hot / cold flushes and the inability to urinate despite desperately needing to all commonly reported throughout the trip. Blurred vision occasionally occurs, blinding the tripper and rarely but occasionally lasting for days to weeks after wards.
After a while, delirium takes over, causing you get used to the feeling and not notice it any more, or perhaps it genuinely fades. Leaving the trippers to experience concrete and 100% convincing visual and auditory hallucinations that can vary from mundane, to fascinating to horrifying.
You can use Datura in many ways, one of the most common ways is to smoke the leaves and flowers, which offers a very mild trip with a duration similar to that of weed. You can also make a tea out of the leaves, flowers, and seeds, or you can eat the seeds with or without cooking them. Eating raw seeds is not recommended because of the high toxicity of them. The most potent parts in decreasing order are respectively the seed pods, leafs and flowers. Seeds are eaten while leaves are usually brewed as tea, though they are also chewed for their effects.
It is extremely important to note however that the potency of plants varies wildly and there is no way for the common man to accurately measure the dosage. At high enough doses Datura becomes an incredibly toxic poison that can easily result in death, making Datura the most dangerous hallucinogen out there with accidental overdoses resulting in hospitalization not unheard of. The safest way to ensure this does not happen is to grind the dried plant matter into an extremely fine and even powder so that the active chemicals within them are distributed evenly across itself. From here you can slowly work your way up in extremely small increments until the correct dosage for that particular plant is found.
If you want to try Datura despite all of its risks, you can grow it yourself using seeds purchased online or find a wild plant in your local area.
Conclusion:
There is little to no insight to be gained from either of these substances and they can be extremely dangerous both physically and mentally if dosage is not payed close attention to. I would not recommend either of these drugs to any human being alive but view them more as drugs of interest than anything. Something that a person tries even if only once, just to see what they are like. Nobody is going to stop you from trying these substances, even our nations governments have deemed these substances as legally acceptable, whilst still prohibiting the use and sale of physically benign and mentally beneficial hallucinogens such as LSD or mushrooms. Keep in mind however, that you and you alone are responsible for your actions and that almost everybody who tries these drugs regrets it immediately.
The physical, visual and mental components of a Delirious trip
Deliriants are the third and final subset of hallucinogens that I am going to categorize. They are unique in that they offer solid hallucinations which display themselves seamlessly into waking consciousness like fully formed dreams or delusions. In contrast, classical psychedelics and dissociatives have progressive levels of multiple all encompassing sensory effects, before reaching the level of concrete hallucination.
The specific drugs that I am using for reference here are the three classical deliriants. Datura (scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine), DPH (diphenhydramine) and Nutmeg (myristicin). These compounds are all considered to be competitive antagonists of the acetylcholine receptors, therefore blocking acetylcholine receptor sites. Acetylcholine (ACh) is the primary messenger of the brain’s cholinergic system, essential to modulation of memory, sleep and dreaming. The prolonged suppression of cholinergic activity and REM sleep due to deprivation or amphetamine abuse creates psychotic episodes which may be defined as bursts of dream activity erupting spontaneously into waking states. Deliriants could therefore be considered to trigger a similar state by blocking acetylcholine and suppressing cholinergic system activity. Causing trippers to begin dreaming whilst maintaining full conscious awareness.
There are multiple health concerns and physical dangers associated with each of these drugs under certain circumstances. So it’s definitely recommended that you do your research before even considering an experience like this.
The employment of deliriants for shamanic purposes through the famed Datura plant has been in use since before recorded history. Chinese, Aztec, Indian, Native American, Caribbean Island, Chumash, Gypsy, Mexican, South American and Zuni records and legends all mention the use of datura leaves for sacred rituals and visionary purposes.
Here I will break down and describe the effects between each of the classical deliriants into their simplest components.
Dysphoria:
One of the first things a person generally notices whilst gradually coming up on a deliriants is how absolutely terrible and miserable they feel.
There is not a single deliriant that does not have multiple negative side effects that will leave you feeling sometimes unbearably terrible. Dysphoric effects do however seem to die down at very high doses, but only because the hallucinations become so overpowering that you forget how ill you are feeling. These feelings are commonly experienced as:
- Sensitivity to sunlight.
- Loss of coordination.
- Dry mouth (sometimes to the point where it becomes impossible to swallow).
- Abnormal heart beat.
- Temporary Erectile Dysfunction.
- Dizziness.
- Drowsiness.
- Muscle cramps.
- Nausea, violent vomiting (at higher doses).
- Having to urinate every 15 minutes.
- Feeling like there is cement in your urethra when you do try to urinate.
- Loss of fine motor skills.
It’s these sensations that render deliriants completely useless as recreational substances. Making them an experience that very few wish to repeat.
Delirium:
Delirium is the mental state that this class of hallucinogens puts you into. It is generally neutral at best and extremely negative at worst. The mental components found during delirious trip are most commonly experienced as:
- Mild to Extreme panic.
- Depression.
- Partial to complete loss of ability to speak.
- Extreme confusion and disorientation.
- Agitation and Nervousness.
- Complete or partial loss of ability to reason.
- Memory loss.
- Feelings of impending doom.
- Feelings of regular doom.
Although all of these effects are quite pronounced and have a large influence on the trip itself. The loss of ability to reason is one of the most defining aspects of delirium as it forces you to accept without question any hallucination that the trip can throw at you. This feels identical to the very same way that we accept the bizarre and nonsensical plot lines to our dreams, despite how irrational they may seem to be upon further inspection once they are over.
Hallucinatory states:
The hallucinations experienced during a delirious trip are by far its most fascinating and overpowering quality. These hallucinations are completely different from any visionary experience you can experience on a psychedelic or dissociative.
Delirious hallucinatory states can be broken down into 3 basic levels,
- Erratic hallucinations.
The lowest level of hallucination generally consists of movement in the peripheral vision and ill defined, fleeting hallucinations which disappear once a person double takes. - Concrete hallucinations.
As the vividness and intensity increases, the trip eventually becomes comprised of completely realistic and static hallucinations. These are generally considered by those who have experienced to be 100% convincing. - Breakthrough hallucinations.
Once the hallucinations become sufficiently elaborate they eventually become all encompassing. Short breakthroughs into delirium start to happen with increasing frequency and length as dosage is increased. Beginning with random flashes of everyday events such as getting dressed to go to work only to suddenly realize half way through that none of it ever happened and you’re actually sitting at your desk. Eventually increasing to permanent, ever shifting alternate realities and complete disconnection from the real world.
The hallucinations can be anything, but there are still many hallucinations that are commonly experienced across people that try these substances. These hallucinations are generally but not by any means not limited to:
- Spiders and insects.
- Shadow people.
- Voices and imagined sounds.
- Pet dogs and cats that you do not own.
- Your mother, often upset with you for taking drugs.
- Human beings, usually behaving completely normally.
- Smoking phantom cigarettes and spliffs.
- Drinking imaginary cups of water.
- Ripples and strange moving textures in certain objects.
- Smoke and distortion in the air.
- Floating inanimate objects such as mobile phones that appear out of nowhere, only to disappear after your hand goes directly through the object while trying to grab hold of it.
- Every day conversations with friends, family members and fictional people that aren’t really there.
- Literally anything your imagination can come up with.

Conclusion:
There isn’t any insight to be gained from this category of trip. It’s sad that there is no such thing as an enjoyable deliriant, since they are just as limitless as any psychedelic at high doses but in an inherently unpleasant way.
The fact that every last one of the classical deliriants is completely legal and available to the masses, despite being far more dangerous than comparatively benign psychedelics shows that the government are not concerned with the dangers of drug induced hallucination in itself. They are concerned with the secondary effects, namely the drug induced changes of perspective which psychedelics offer but deliriants do not.
Nobody is going to stop you from trying this but if you’re completely set on it, at least wait until you have had a large amount of experience being out of your mind on psychedelic and dissociative substances first.
