Ayahuasca, broken down and described

Onset : 20 - 60 minutes
Duration : 2 - 6 hours
Normal After Effects : 1 - 8 hours

Ayahuasca is any of various psychoactive infusions prepared from a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as B. caapi or a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (RIMAs) such as syrian rue, taken 15 - 20 minutes before a  brewed dimethyltryptamine (DMT) containing plant species. There are a large variety of these plants but they are most commonly either Psychotria viridis leaves or Mimosa Hostillis rootbark.
An MAOI inhibitor must be taken 10 - 20 minutes before the DMT and is necessary as DMT remains inactive when consumed orally without one. This is because without it the gut breaks down the DMT molecule before it can reach the brain.
It comes in the form of a foul tasting brown liquid that has been used by the indigenous tribes of South America since before recorded history. First discovered by the western world however in the 16th century, when Christian missionaries from Spain and Portugal predictably described it as the work of the devil.
Here I will describe and categorize each subjective effect that the Ayahuasca experience has to offer in as much detail as I possibly can.

the Purge:
Ayahuasca is very famous for its nausea, violent vomiting and occasional diarrhoea that generally accompany the first 45 minutes or so of the trip, but this is not an effect caused by any of the psychoactive compounds found in this substance. It is a result of the Tannins, wood dust and plant matter that is usually left within the brewed liquid which can be easily removed through a slight recipe alteration that I will go into later. The purge is traditionally considered by shamans to be a sacred part of the trip, cleansing the trippers mind, body and spirit but I personally disagree with the assumption that it is even remotely necessary.
If the purge is allowed to happen the first physical sensation that is usually noticed is an intense nausea that gradually builds up until the user purges and vomits. This vomiting doesn’t feel particularly violent and is over with very quickly. The nausea before it can be extremely uncomfortable and generally makes it difficult to move for the first 45 minutes of the trip. After it is over and done with, the tripper will feel extremely refreshed and rejuvinated.
The biggest reason that I view the purge as an unnecessary cultural construct is because through my extensive personal experience with Ayahuasca. I have never seen anybody experience a purge without causing an immediate and sudden end to their trip. Even when the vomiting is held back for 45 - 90 minutes allowing for it to digest. The entire internet may disagree with me but if it was truly necessary to purge before a successful trip, a simple removal of the non psychoactive compounds in the brew should not be enough to stop it. The purge should be associated with consuming wood. Not Ayahuasca.

Body high:
Beyond nausea, the physical sensation of the body high is a very difficult to place but genuine feeling of euphoria and a sense of being completely in touch with the animal body. At higher doses this sensation becomes spontaneous rushes of intense pleasure that envelops every single nerve ending on your body. This is intense but does not overwhelm. You even have a large amount of control in inducing these rushes if you constantly use your thoughts to communicate with, encourage and cheer the Ayahuasca on to produce and intensify the body high. This does not affect motor control or balance allowing for you to be fully mobile and to explore anything that you could explore sober.

Head space:
The head space of Ayahuasca is probably my favourite of all the traditional shamanic psychedelics. It puts you into a very profound state of a completely rational objectiveness that seems intertwined with a wide array of very intense feelings and emotions. This feels as if your cultural filter has been instantly removed and gives you the power to look at any topic without any irrational biases, giving you an intense appreciation for life and everything within in it with a huge thirst for knowledge.
Ayahuasca has incredibly sharp rapid fire thoughts that feel as if a quick paced intelligent conversation with yourself is constantly happening inside of your mind. It often feels like it literally forcing you to become a better person with regular comments, such as:

  • Stand up straight!
  • Stop being an idiot!
  • Eat more fruit!
  • Spend more time with your family!

These comments feel like spontaneous thoughts popping into your head. They are often snide, but envelop everything from the big things in life to the small things. Forcing you to follow them by making you too self-aware to be capable of rationalising any other options.
The Ayahuasca head space is surprisingly less of a mind fuck than any other psychedelic I have found. With thought patterns that generally steer towards thoughts of being human, introspection, the passing of generations, tribal thinking and increased mystical thoughts.

A Sensed Presence of the “Other”:
During an Ayahuasca trip it is almost universally reported that it genuinely feels as if there is an authoritative presence or intelligence that is completely guiding or directing the trip, with a sometimes twisted sense of humour. It really does feel as if the Other is sitting behind the scenes pushing all the right buttons and completely directing your trip from a position that is not necessarily on your side. This Other seems to have a habit of amplifying negative characteristics found within the irrational, the arrogant and just about anybody who goes into this with the wrong attitude. Usually causing them to experience a bad trip.
The “Other” feels as if it controls the visual intensity of the trip sporadically, creating a trip that flows completely differently to other substances. All other classical psychedelics which I have encountered offer a linear and constant stream of visuals with a consistent and predictable peak, onset, etc. This sensed presence of the “other” is a very distinct feeling and the lowest form of entity contact found on psychedelic drugs. It unsurprisingly an extremely common feeling during sub breakthrough DMT trips.

Visual effects:
Ayahuasca visuals do not behave in the same way as normal visuals. At first I was expecting a merely alternatively stylized version of the visuals experienced on mushrooms and LSD, which are generally described as a consistently fast moving and constant stream of geometric patterns, fractals and imagery.
Instead, the visuals, even at lower levels look just like real physical floating patterns that stand still and slowly grow out of the air in a very organic fashion. If allowed these visuals steadily grow, build up, join together and form networks all around you that become increasingly intense as you watch them but die down and reset to base level if they are disturbed. Visuals can be disturbed by many things but sudden changes in the environment such as suddenly having to perform a task, a light being switched on, a sudden change in music or any unexpected changes to the vibes of the room will generally reset them. Despite having been reset however the visuals do not take long to grow back and can quickly take over as you immediately begin to lose yourself in them.
These visuals are extremely sensitive to light and noise however making a day time trip require abnormally high dosages. Technology such as screens and loud music also causes the visuals to be stopped in their tracks and not display themselves to you in the first place. This is why Ayahuasca must be taken in a dark and relaxed atmosphere for the best effects.
The specific style attributed to Ayahuasca visuals are fully formed 3D structures of limitless style and possibilities that are comprised of a closed eye visual based material. Ayahuasca visuals are generally formed into specific structures instead of laid out in a completely unorganised fashion. These structures show huge amounts of imagery and get increasingly drawn out and elaborate depending on the dosage, eventually becoming fully fledged hallucinations, entity contact, imagined landscapes and impossible scenarios.
Full on Ayahuasca hallucinations often present themselves in a tunnel of light and colour that the tripper endlessly flies through. This tunnel is filled with perfectly formed concepts and elaborate hallucinations.

Open eye transformations experienced on Ayahuasca are another common occurrence, happening even at lower doses or when you seem to have completely come down off of your trip. These low level hallucinations can be described very simply as objects transforming into completely new and random concepts. They are never created from complete scratch but are instead always based on something such as a pre-existing physical object. Often presenting themselves when you lose focus and stare at literally anything. This losing focus and zoning in on something as it elaborately transforms into an incomprehensible anything comes completely naturally during an Ayahuasca trip. They are much more realistic than the cartoony and silly distortions found on LSD and do not disappear once you realize they are present. These hallucinations only collapse in on themselves once you double take but are still incredibly persistent compared to other psychedelics as an ability to remain completely and constantly lost in the distortion seems to be present.

Conclusion:
Ayahuasca is by far my favourite psychedelic, it is extremely easy to make and offers a completely different but amazing style of trip that needs to be taken much more seriously. If I had to choose a single substance for society to base its culture around it would be Ayahuasca, not LSD and certainly not Alcohol.
